MY KITCHEN Rules villains Zana and Gianni have lost their chance at cooking glory after being pipped by quiet sisters Tasia and Gracia in Thursday night’s first semi final round.
Dividing viewers with her harsh criticisms and disgusted facial expressions throughout the series, Zana began her final challenge by saying: “We’re not gonna let anybody stop us. We’re here to winâ€.
But she was sorely mistaken. Finishing the night with a grand total score of 43 out of 60, it was far behind Tasia and Gracia’s score of 55, and they were eliminated from the competition. With judge Pete Evans telling the sisters they served up the “strongest three-course menu I’ve ever had in this competitionâ€, Tasia and Gracia now move forward into next week’s grand final.
“To be honest, losing against Tasia and Gracia isn’t so bad because they’re such a strong team,†Zana said after being eliminated. “And you deserve to be in the grand final. So, have your confidence because your food’s phenomenal.â€
Both teams started the night strong with their entrees.
Serving up beetroot and goats cheese ravioli with sage butter, Pete described Zana and Gianni’s first dish as “sensationalâ€.
“I don’t really have to say much,†Colin added. “Look at my plate — it’s empty. And that’s the highest compliment you can give a cook. The browned butter, it’s a classic. The pasta’s cooked well. I love the nuts and the beetroot. I think that little bit of texture is beautiful. This is a competition-winning dish. As was the last one.â€
Tasia and Gracia’s entree of lobster tail with yellow curry sauce scored similar praise.
“The lobster’s been cooked superbly. in the middle, so gorgeously tender,†guest judge Karen Martini said. “And what could have gone really wrong here is that sauce is really intense. If they had drowned the lobster, the delicateness of its flesh, but they have balanced all of those flavours beautifully.â€
The sisters maintained a high standard with their main of crispy fried barramundi.
“The fish is crispy and delicious,†Karen said. “You’ve got this beautiful, refreshing salad on the side. The sauce is tempered really well, but it’s not overpowering.â€
But Zana and Gianni failed to keep up with their main. Presentation of their beef goulash with heirloom carrots and pickles let them down — as well as an unwanted burnt flavour.
“The meat’s cooked well, I like the pickles, and I like that sour cream on top,†Colin said. “It just sort of breaks it up a bit. Is it too rustic? Uh, maybe. But it is packing a lot of flavour.â€
Menu added: “I think it’s not smoky, it’s burnt.â€
Their dessert also left the judges asking questions. While guest judge Liz Egan said their krempita with vanilla poached figs was “almost something you’d buy from a cake shopâ€, the other judges were unimpressed with the poached figs and it’s simplistic nature.
Serving up their dessert of coconut panna cotta, Tasia and Gracia wowed the judges with their technique.
“The thing about a good panna cotta is it’s got to have as little as possible gelatine in there that it just holds together,†Colin noted. “And you’ve just seen the wobble on that. There’s a lot of restaurants you go to and you get, like, a cricket ball, it’s that hard.â€
On Monday night, mother-son duo Anna and Jordan will go head-to-head with Carmine and Lauren for the remaining spot in the grand final.
My Kitchen Rules continues Monday night at 7.30pm on Seven.
