The latest reading for initial jobless claims will be out at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Economists are expecting claims to rise slightly to 263,000, according to the Bloomberg consensus.
Last week claims unexpectedly fell to 253,000. Although that may have sounded like a great thing, economists noted that it may just have reflected some seasonal noise.
“We’d love to be able to argue convincingly that these data represent hard evidence of a further improvement in labour market conditions, but it’s more likely that Easter-related seasonal adjustment problems explain the drop,†wrote Pantheon Macroeconomics’ Ian Shepherdson after the data crossed.
Perhaps more notably, as of last week, initial claims have been below 300,000 for 58 straight weeks — the longest streak since 1973.
