A woman has been charged with murder after another woman was found dead on a nature strip in Sunbury, north-west of Melbourne.

Police and other emergency services were called to Dalkeith Court about 7.30am on Saturday, where they discovered the body of a 44-year-old woman.

Channel Seven named the victim as Rachel Tyquin.

Ms Tyquin's body was found on the nature strip near her home.

The fitness instructor was reportedly killed while walking to work, suffering multiple stab wounds.

Police are yet to reveal the exact cause of death.

A short time later, a woman living across the road from Ms Tyquin drove to Sunbury police station.

Channel Seven named the  woman in custody as Eva Maria Whitecross.

Her Subaru Forester was cordoned off with police tape outside Sunbury police station and kept as evidence.

Homicide Squad detectives interviewed a woman for several hours on Saturday before charging her with murder.

The 53-year-old appeared in an out-of-sessions hearing and was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
