Sky News International Editor Stan Grant has been appointed to the Referendum Council on constitutional recognition.
'It is an honour to serve this country in what I think is a really important step in completing us as a nation.... it is possibly a historic moment for our country,' he said in an Interview with Sky News.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and opposition leader Bill Shorten announced that the broadcaster has been appointed to the Referendum Council following the departure of Patrick Dodson, who has resigned to become a Senate candidate for Labor.
'Mr Grant's extensive experience and commitment to constitutional recognition and Indigenous affairs will be invaluable in the role as a member of the Referendum Council,' they said in a joint statement.
Stan Grant told Sky News that he is committed to ensuring the process of a referendum continues.
'The process is ongoing, we don't even have a question yet... having said that, there is no doubt that it is difficult to get a referendum to pass in Australia.'
'What is absolutely important here is though, is all Australian voices are heard,' he said.
The announcement follows recent talks of Mr Grant making a potential career move into politics, with the Wiradjuri man and award-winning reporter revealing it could be on the cards.
Despite not confirming whether he'll use his new platform to pave a political career, Stan did recognise the role will mean he'll live a more public life.
'This is a political role and fully acknowledge that I have a role in public life now,' he said.
Established in 2015, the council aims to direct the government on ensuring the planned referendum on constitutional recognition is a success.
Stan Grant says that he is hearing that Australia is ready for a referendum to recognise Indigenous people in the constitution.
'Overwhelmingly people are in favour of the idea of recognising Indigenous people in the constitution,' he said before admitting that it is 'difficult' to change a constitution, but 'it should be.'
