Building approvals figures are up during February driven by strong unit figures.

THE latest building approval figures are up, driven mostly by strong results in the unit sector.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics figures building approvals rose by 3.1 per cent during February.

This was driven by a 7.7 per cent increase in units.

Approvals for houses fell during the same period by 1 per cent, seasonally adjusted.

The figures revealed Tasmania could be about to undergo a building surge with its approvals up by 24 per cent for the month.

It was followed by New South Wales where approvals increased by 14.4 per cent and then Queensland which was up by 9.5 per cent.

There were 18,252 dwellings approved nationally during February, 8721 of those were units.
