A car has been found and a city street cordoned off after a dramatic chase through Melbourne's inner suburbs.

A dark coloured BMW was reportedly on the wrong side of the road of the Princes Highway in Flemington with three police cars in pursuit.

A police spokesperson said officers were pursuing the man after an attempted arrest in North Melbourne. 

The chase ended in the CBD, with the black BMW sitting outside a hotel in Downie Street around 1.30pm.

There appears to be a bullet hole in the driver's side windscreen.

Police are searching for the man.

The entire street has been cordoned off by police.

Earlier, a caller rang radio station 3AW to report the car driving erratically, with the man behind the wheel appearing to be injured and drug affected.

"The windshield is broken, it looks like there were gun shots through the windshield (and) the gentleman was bleeding quite profusely," he told 3AW.

The caller said three other vehicles were forced to take evasive action.
