APPLE is set to unveil a new, smaller iPhone with similar capabilities to its flagship 6s model. The technology giant is holding a live event on Monday, with speculation that as well as the iPhone SE, a new iPad will also be announced, plus an update on the Apple Watch.
Reports suggest a software update for the wearable device will be revealed at the very least, if not an Apple Watch 2, which would come a year after the device first launched.
The event in California takes place a day before Apple is due in court over its continued battle with the US Justice Department and the FBI over encryption.
Authorities are attempting to force the firm to help them bypass security features on the locked phone of a terrorism suspect from the San Bernardino shootings last year.
Apple has so far refused on grounds of user privacy, and it is unclear whether the company plans to address the issue at the live event.
Software, on the other hand, is likely to be discussed at length, with an update to iOS 9, which powers the iPhone and iPad, set to be shown off.
The update should include a new nightshift mode, which reduces blue light on the screen for better night-time reading, as well as touch ID fingerprint scan login for protecting items in the notes app.
The anticipated iPhone SE is rumoured to be four inches in size — similar to the iPhone 5 that launched in 2012 — but it is expected to have the same 12 megapixel camera as the iPhone 6s, released last September, as well as a touch ID fingerprint scanner. Reports on the rumoured new iPad suggest it could be a smaller version of the iPad Pro.
