A BRITISH teen has doctors stumped by her mysterious ailment that causes her to bleed almost non-stop from her eyes/
The BBC reports that Marnie-Rae Harvey, 17, first began to cough up blood one day in March 2013. Then, this past July, she woke to find her face completely covered in blood.
Marnie-Rae was rushed to hospital by ambulance as tears of blood streaked her face.
Paramedics were shocked by her bizarre symptoms, she said. Soon after, doctors found themselves perplexed, as well.
“When I got to the hospital they looked in my eye but everything was clear,†Marnie-Rae said. “They can bleed and it can cover my face with blood and in seconds it’s just gone completely white back to normal.â€
While doctors tested her blood for irregularities, Marnie-Rae continued to bleed every day for two weeks. In addition to her eyes, the condition affects her ears, gums, fingernails, scalp, nose and fingernails.
Marnie-Rae’s blood test revealed only that she had a weakened immune system. Eye specialists, gynaecologists, haematologists, neurologists and paediatricians have all yet to uncover what’s causing the frightening symptoms.
Marnie-Ray said her life has been put on hold as she holds out hope doctors find a cause and a cure for bleeding eyes.
Doctors now believe endometriosis, or abnormal tissue growth in the uterus, may be to blame for the condition. They’ve administered a drug to Marnie-Rae that induces menopause in the hope it will help stop the bleeding.
While it won’t be clear until April whether the drug has worked, Marnie-Rae said she has her doubts already.
“I’m going through the symptoms like sweating and mood swings but I’m still bleeding,†she said.
