Baker Hughes will release its latest count of US oil and gas rigs at the top of the hour.

The combined count plunged to a record low last week, going back to at least 1949. It totaled 480.

The oil-rig count dropped for a 12th straight period, by 6 to 386, to the lowest level since December 2009.

West Texas Intermediate crude was trading above $40 per barrel on Friday ahead of the data release. It crossed the mark Thursday for the first time since December.
