UPDATE: Heartbroken family and friends of Dragons Abreast paddler Carol Waitohi lined Currumbin Creek after her body was found washed up this morning.
The 50-year-old mother of three disappeared off the back of a boat during training in Currumbin Creek yesterday evening. Emergency crews searched throughout the night before her body was found about 7.45am today.
Currumbin Dragon Boat Club coach Faye Rallings said one minute Carol was there, the next she was gone.
“The rowers didn’t hear a sound, the first they knew of her being gone was when the boat began to veer,†she said.
“She was standing at the back steering, no one knows what happened, it’s just heartbreaking.
“Carol was a member with us, but joined the pink ladies about a year ago to continue her mother’s work with the club.
“Her mum Lorraine was on the boat when she disappeared — it’s just devastating.â€

The body of a woman missing after falling from a dragon boat last night has been found.
Searchers found the woman’s body on the shore behind a townhouse complex that backs on to the creek about 7.30am.
Authorities searched throughout the night for the woman who was reported missing after she fell from the back of a dragon boat.
The woman was one of a team of 16 women rowers participating in a training session in the dragon boat.
The missing woman was the boat’s coxswain and there are reports her fellow crew members were not initially aware she had fallen overboard.
The massive land and air search was launched at Currumbin Creek after police received reports of the woman falling overboard about 6.50pm.
Family and friends of the woman gathered on the shore near the dragon boat clubhouse awaiting news, many spending the night there.
They said the 50-year-old woman is believed to have fallen into the water from the stern of a dragon boat in the section of Currumbin Creek near the M1 overpass.
Police, Water Police, a Polair chopper, surf lifesavers and members of the public in canoes were all involved in the search.
A Currumbin resident last night said the helicopter had been circling the area with its spotlight on.
“They had the loud speaker going as well, urging everyone who lived along the creek to check their backyards,†she said.
