FRIENDS of fitness entrepreneur Michelle Bridges are relieved to hear her debut CD does not feature her attempting to sing.
The celebrity personal trainer and self-confessed music fanatic will release her double-CD workout playlist Booty Blitz Trax in April, deliberately choosing to highlight a raft of Australian acts on it for her local and international followers.
UNWARRANTED CRITICISM: Commando defends Bridges’ post-baby workouts
She cites Jessica Mauboy’s hit This Ain’t Love as one of her favourite running songs, using its explosive chorus as a motivational soundtrack.
“This Ain’t Love is the best song to run to because of the uplift of the chorus,†she said.
“I play games with myself sometimes where you choose a song which has a moderate pace in the verse and pre-chorus or bridge and then when the chorus kicks in, you just go for it. It’s perfect for interval training.â€
DJs would appreciate the intricacies of constructing the perfect playlist for a workout because it depends on the beats-per-minute (BPM) of each song.
She learned the art of matching the required heart-rate to BPM in her early days of conducting choreographed fitness classes and loves finding the elusive up-tempo songs which will get the blood pumping.
Her new record label partners were fascinated to watch her do the counts with a stopwatch and pen and paper, marking down each beat.
She also had to structure the setlist considering the ebb and flow of a workout from warming up to hitting your peak stride and then warming down.
The trainer also considered the lyrical content, looking for phrases and words which would motivate rather than distract during exercise.
“This Ain’t Love is 165 BPM and we found the Rogue Traders was the fastest I think, with Don’t You Wanna Feel at 170 BPM.â€
Bridges, who is managing to juggle new motherhood of 11-week-old Axel with the duties of her burgeoning fitness empire, said she was adamant there were Australian made songs in the collection.
A secondary bonus of the Booty Blitz albums, beyond its role to motivate those wanting to get fit, was introducing local artists to her international followers in the UK, Ireland, USA and Canada.
Her role as a celebrity trainer on the Biggest Loser, which screens overseas, has not only introduced her to a global audience but expats have also championed her workout programs in other countries.
Alongside Mauboy and Rogue Traders are songs by singles by chart-slayer Sia, Eurovision representative Dami Im, Samantha Jade, Justice Crew and Nathaniel.
It is testament to her major success that international superstars including Justin Timberlake, Coldplay, Britney Spears, Calvin Harris, One Direction, Kelly Clarkson and Miley Cyrus were among the artists who gave permission for Bridges to use their music on her playlist.
It can be difficult to license tracks for a compilation with artists not giving permission to every request to use their songs.
“We couldn’t get everything cleared but this is very close to my wishlist,†she said.
“I was so happy to get Coldplay’s permission and from way back at my City Gym days, I have always loved having a Britney song in the set.â€
One of her new favourite bands didn’t make the cut, not because they said no but the hardcore rock of Byron Bay band Parkway Drive would not have fit in with the rest of the selection.
Her partner Steve “The Commando†Willis has introduced her to the metalcore heroes and she loves training to them.
“I did ask if I could get Parkway Drive onto the albums but I don’t think anyone else thought it was a good idea,†she said.
Learning to DJ is now on her bucket list alongside surfing lessons.
Booty Blitz Trax is released on April 8.
