MADONNA may be wowing Australian audiences during her Rebel Heart tour, but now her daughter is taking centre stage as one of the new faces of Stella McCartney’s POP fragrance.
“So happy to have Lola on the POP team! Lola, who I’ve known her entire life, is at the beginning of her career as a performance artist,†McCartney wrote via Instagram.
“She’s an independent, inspirational and free-spirited young woman. Despite being born in the spotlight, she has kept her feet firmly on the ground!â€
In the campaign, Lourdes Leon (known as Lola to her family) poses with Canadian musician Grimes, actress Amandla Stenberg, and animal activist Kenya Kinski-Jones.
“Together as one these strong women are a force to be reckoned with,†McCartney said.
In the first image released for the campaign, Leon’s naturally dark hair has been dyed a striking lavender shade, while the teenager’s knuckle tattoos, which pay homage to her mum (currently in the midst of an emotional custody battle over Leon’s half-brother, Rocco) and dad (Madonna’s former boyfriend, Carlos Leon), are on full display.
This is the 19-year-old’s first foray into fashion spotlight since launching the Material Girl line for US department store Macy’s with her mum back in 2010.
Leon, who has maintained a low key life and who attends university in Michigan, spoke in an interview about her decision to step more firmly into the spotlight via McCartney (a long-time friend of her mum’s).
“I have a lot of people judging my every move,†she told Vogue. “It’s important for me to not let it rule my life.â€
In an era of online bullying and body-shaming, she said she was drawn to the McCartney campaign because it aims to promote self-acceptance and moral support between women.
“I go through this struggle myself, [where] women’s bodies have been made so public that everyone feels like they need to comment,†Leon said. “I love when someone doesn’t pretend to be someone they are not.â€
