Eek ... People are paying Horror Movie Campout to scare them out of their wits. Picture: Horror Movie Campout

AUSTRALIANS are paying good money for a camping trip where people jump out at you and chase you will chainsaws and axes after a night of watching horror films.

Horror Movie Campout has already scared the wits out of South Australians in October and Melbourians in December and on Saturday night it is Sydney’s turn with 1000 people expected to camp at Mount Penang Parklands near Gosford.

For most it is the thing nightmares are made of.

It all starts relatively normal. The campsite opens at 3pm, then they have DJs and live bands before playing a string of horror films. Then it wraps up at around 1am or 2am.

The organisers hire about 16 actors to roam the site in character with the aim of scaring as many people as possible.

The immersive experience will cost you about $100 and the website suggests you have “you mummy on speed dial”.

One of the organisers, Amy Booth, said people have different reactions. Some cry, some end up having to leave the camp and others put on as much bravado as possible.
