Among the biggest names in music gathered for the Grammys at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, there were a few famous faces missing.

No Beyonce, no Nicki Minaj and now no Rihanna, who has pulled out due to illness.

Rihanna withdrew from her planned performance on doctor's orders, having been stricken down with bronchitis, reports Billboard.com.

She reportedly did make it to the venue for rehearsals, but her doctor stepped in and warned her she could face permanently damaging her voice.

Her representative said she had been on antibiotics for three days but it "did not kill the infection adequately".

The singer, who is currently spruiking latest album Anti, has been put on vocal rest for 48 hours by her doctor as she was "at risk of hemorrhaging her vocal cords". She was set to perform Kiss It Better.

It's not the best time for Rihanna to get sick. She faces the demands of a world tour kicking off at the end of the month. Her Anti world tour starts on February 26 in San Diego, hitting the US and Europe through until August.

Lauryn Hill, who was expected to perform alongside the Weeknd, was also a no-show, claiming that the she had not had enough time to prepare for the event.
