Michael Clarke at Sydney’s Pratten Park on Wednesday ahead of his comeback to grade cricket.

MICHAEL Clarke might have captained Australia in three Ashes series, but on Saturday one of the game’s sharpest minds will be taking orders from a member of England cricketing royalty.

Fabian Cowdrey is the 23-year-old grandson of the late and great Lord Colin Cowdrey and the man who will be Clarke’s first skipper in his anticipated comeback for beloved grade club Western Suburbs.

The Magpies are winless and sitting dead last in the Sydney first grade competition and Clarke was asked if he would lead the side in his return to his roots at Pratten Park.

But Clarke – looking to put something back into the game that gave him everything by returning to his roots – didn’t feel comfortable taking over the reins given he’s joining his junior club mid-season and at this stage hasn’t committed to anything more than the one match at this point in time.

Not much has gone right for Wests over the past couple of seasons, but the blood flowing through the veins of their leadership group couldn’t be stronger.

Lord Cowdrey was the first man ever to play 100 Tests and the first English cricketer to be given peerage. His grandson Fabian has 11 first-class matches under his belt for Kent and is out in Sydney trying to make his mark.

One of Australia’s greatest ever captains, Clarke says he’s happy to act as deputy for an Englishman.

“He’s a good young fella, Fabian,” said Clarke.

“I can try and help him and if he wants my help I’m there for him. But I just want to play with the guys and have a game – not stress too much about anything else.

“We’re coming last, we haven’t performed this year so hopefully we can get a spring in our step.

“For me it’s about going and playing with my mates at a club I’ve always loved. To this day I still love playing for Wests.”

Clarke isn’t ruling anything out with his comeback. Middlesex are reportedly interested in the 34-year-old’s services and a Big Bash League stint also in the mix.

However, the star batsman says a one-off game for Wests is the only thing on the agenda at this point.
