Andy Murray and Kim Sears have welcomed a baby girl.

BRITISH tennis star Andy Murray and his wife Kim Sears have welcomed a baby girl.

The BBC reports Sears gave birth on Sunday, although the couple, both 28, has not yet released an official confirmation.

Murray’s grandmother Shirley Erskine said she was “absolutely delighted” at her great granddaughter’s arrival and said the couple didn’t know the baby would be a girl.

“It seems a long time that we’ve been waiting for this but all’s well now as far as I know,” she said from her home in Dunblane, Scotland, adding that she found out via text.

“I don’t have any details I just know that I’ve got a great granddaughter so that is just lovely.

“All I could think of after Andy had finished playing his final [in the Australian Open] was ‘Oh good, at least he’ll get home now’.

“It’s not easy getting home from Australia. He couldn’t have been further away. Fortunately, he was home in plenty of time and all’s well.”

Murray and Sears, residing in the English county of Surrey, were married in April 2015.

Sears’ pregnancy was publicly confirmed last August.

In January, the player made it clear he would not hesitate to drop out of the Australian Open if the baby was born earlier than expected and stressed that his family would always be his “priority”.

“My child is more important to me, and my wife is more important to me, than a tennis match,” he said.

“It’s a big change for me and my wife, but that’s the current priority and I’ll see after that. I have no idea how that will change things. I still love tennis.”

Following news of the birth, sports personalities, politicians and tennis fans tweeted their congratulations.
