NOBODY was ready for this.
UFC star Matt Mitrione lost the fight against UFC star Travis Browne and was lucky not to lose his right eye in a gruesome incident on the UFC Fight Night Boston card.
The fight between the two ranked heavyweights has turned Mitrione and his eye into a viral internet sensation.
It's not hard to see why.
Late in the first round of their three-round battle, the two came together on their feet. Mitrione hobbled away from the exchange, clearly irritated by some contact with his eye.
Replays showed the 1.9m 120kg American had accidentally copped a stray finger to the eye.
He was able to carry on.
In the second round Mitrione appeared to take another accidental poke in the eye as Browne attempted to defend himself from a series of left hand punches.
Clearly struggling with impaired vision as a result of the multiple whacks, the Octagon referee paused the fight while medical officials checked to see if it was safe for Mitrione to continue.
Browne was not punished for the eye-gouge.
It got worse in the third round.
After landing a number of solid punched to Mitrione’s head, Browne also landed a barrage of face punches as Mitrione lamely attempted to protect his noggin after Browne had successfully pulled off a take-down.
After the series of battering shots to the head, which Mitrione could barely defend, the fight was stopped with 55 seconds to go in the third round.
Browne was awarded the fight via a third round TKO.
It was only after the fight that fans were given a true glimpse of how bad the damage was to Mitrione’s eye.
No amount of vaseline can cover this up.

Naturally, the internet lost its mind.
