Canberra is bracing for a hot, dry weekend but a cool change could bring light rain on Christmas Day.

Warm conditions experienced throughout the ACT region are forecast to hang around for the next couple of days, with the mercury tipped to soar to 36 degrees on Saturday and 37 degrees on Sunday.

Weatherzone meteorologist James Casey said the capital would cop sunny, hot and "extremely dry" weather on the weekend with humidity sitting about 10 per cent.

Temperatures are set to soar to 37 degrees on Sunday.

Firefighters are working hard to contain a fire burning in remote bushland south of Canberra before Sunday's scorching heat, which they predict will hamper efforts to extinguish the blaze.

High temperatures in the ACT are set to plummet to a top of 27 degrees on Monday as a cold front sweeps across south-east Australia.

Mr Casey said the southerly change would bring moisture, clouds and possible showers to the capital in the days leading up to December 25.

Temperatures would drop again to hover around 23 or 24 degrees between Tuesday and Thursday before rising to a top of 28 on Christmas Day.

"Even though there is the chance of a shower, Christmas Day looks like it will be alright for most of the day with a possible shower later on," Mr Casey said.

Cool and showery conditions expected for most of next week were expected to ease by Boxing Day.
