Boxer and former NRL player Solomon Haumono wants to take on Danny Green.

SOLOMON Haumono has sensationally challenged Danny Green to a fight, slamming the former world champion for picking “soft targets” like Sonny Bill Williams. VOTE IN OUR POLL BELOW:

Days after it emerged Green had spoken to Williams’s manager Khoder Nasser about a potential bout against the All Blacks superstar in 2016, Haumono has released a strongly-worded statement that puts Green firmly in the spotlight over his selection of opponents.

“Why pick Sonny when he is only a part-time boxer who hasn’t fought in nearly a year? Danny is world class as we saw in his last fight when he easily beat an opponent who’d just fought for a world title,” Haumono said.

“Green against SBW is a ridiculous mismatch. Danny is a former world champion who has boxed over 200 rounds as a professional. Sonny’s only had seven bouts and 34 rounds.

“Danny has a history of picking soft targets, like Paul Briggs who hadn’t fought in nearly three years after retiring on medical grounds.

“Then he targets Choc (Anthony Mundine) who is coming off a bad loss and has been fighting four weight divisions below him at junior middleweight.

“My message to Danny Green is loud and clear – if you want to move up with the big boys at heavyweight – then look no further. I’m willing to face you anywhere, anytime.

“I am world-rated, and like Choc and Sonny Bill I have played rugby league at the highest level.

“Let’s dance Green Machine. My manager Matt Rose will welcome your call anytime, if you find the courage.”

Haumono is ranked No.14 by the WBA, just below knockout sensations Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker.

Green has chased a rematch with Mundine for some time, but has turned his attention to Williams after repeated stalls in talks with his old foe, who won a unanimous points decision in their 2006 fight and then moved down in weight as Green moved up.

Green’s offer to move up to heavyweight to fight Williams has sparked Haumono’s interest in taking on the Perth slugger.

Former NRL star Haumono has a a professional boxing record of 23-2-2 (20 KOs), while Green is 34-5 with 28 knockouts.

Green retired in 2012 after defeating Shane Cameron, who had moved down from heavyweight to cruiserweight.

After a three-year hiatus, Green returned to the ring this year, winning a 10-round decision against Roberto Bolonti in a bid to set up the rematch with Mundine, who was later beaten by Charles Hatley in a junior middleweight bout.

Haumono, who has always fought at heavyweight and weighs 110kg - the same as Williams - knocked out Marcelo Nascimento in October 2013, but did not fight in 2014 due to promotional issues.

He returned to the squared circle this year with two victories over Filipo Masoe and Hunter Sam, and is chasing a shot at a major title.

Green did not return calls regarding Haumono’s call-out.
