The Beautiful Lie star has just released her second collection of dreamy electro pop EP2, and more than 70 college radio stations in the US have picked up the single Understand.

The 25-year-old singer and songwriter has funded her musical career with the proceeds of her acting jobs and broadened her skills to include co-directing and even editing her own videos.

“I’ve been pretty lucky with acting that I have been able to fund my music, it’s a blessing,” she said.

“All my free time is spent working on music so my hobby has now become more of another career.”

Lowe had no great musical ambitions while studying at a performance arts school as a teenager until she discovered the work of avant garde Swedish pop star Lykke Li.

She doubted her ethereal vocals could translate into a pop songs.

“I always wanted to be a belter. I thought if I could sing louder, it would resonate more but if I try to do that, it sounds fake,” she said, laughing.

“Then I heard Lykke Li and she sings so differently and owns it and that’s when I realised I could do that.”

Playing recent tours with other rising alternative music stars including Meg Mac and Montaigne has confirmed just how far her delicate music has translated across the airwaves.

When a young woman at the front of the stage at a gig this year started singing along to her songs including Understand and recent single Pink Flowers, Lowe was almost startled into silence.

“It’s one thing to have your friends sing along because they are your friends but when someone at a show did it, I was freaked out, I started giggling,” she said.

“I wanted to give her the mic but realised I had to keep going and stay in tune.”

She describes the songs on EP2 as “pretty personal”, addressing the usual themes of heartbreak and frustration.

One track Breathe tackles the issue of anxiety which has become a prevailing theme among Australian songwriters this year with Katie Noonan, Josh Pyke and many others tackling the subject on their albums.

“So many creative people suffer some form of anxiety and depression, you have to constantly put yourself out there to be judged,” she said.

“It’s tough but it’s something a lot of people have to deal with, especially with social media now.”

Lowe plans to head back to America in early 2016 to organise the release of EP2 there and launch her music career in the world’s biggest market after a run of concerts here to support the release.

She will also probably be doing the movie festival rounds for Waiting For The Miracle To Come which she filmed in America earlier this year with Charlotte Rampling and Willie Nelson.

“His hair is definitely longer than mine,” she said.
