MOST of us struggle to keep an indoor plant alive, but the owners of this mega mansion in Sydney’s Hills district have to look after a forest with a creek and waterfall in their lounge room.
Inside the luxurious residence, situated in two prime hectares at Galston, is a stunning atrium with a waterfall and running creek encased in a towering three-metre window.
Set against the formal dining and living areas of the home, it offers a new twist on the theme of bringing the ‘outdoors inside’.
“I have never seen a creek through a house — I have never seen anything like this at all, not in the Hills District, not anywhere,†said agent Sandy Ward from Ray White Dural, who has just listed the property for sale.
The sprawling six bedroom home was built 15 years ago and was the brainchild of its former owner the late architect John Van Berkel.
The new owners paid $2.75 million for the property in 2002 and it has now been listed with a price guide of ‘offers over $5 million’.
The full brick double storey residence lies behind electric security gates on Crosslands Rd.
It was constructed on 220 piers to ensure the home was solid as possible.
The long driveway cuts through two cascading man-made dams on the estate, built with a special drainage system to prevent flooding.
The road winds up to the front of the manor, which is framed by beautiful hedging, sculptured trees and surrounded by rolling green paddocks.
Two marble steps in the vast entry lead to the formal room with its amazing greenery as a backdrop.
“It is just like a wooded area and is beautiful,†Ms Ward said.
“The current owner’s wife and then six-year-old daughter decided they wanted to buy the house as soon as they walked in and saw it from the front steps.â€
The atrium windows are sun protected so a special UV system kicks in at night giving the plants enough light to thrive.
It is also temperature controlled by computer so if anything goes wrong or malfunctions, such as the waterfall stopping, it sends an alert.
The high-end property also boasts other features including a billiard room, wet bar and home theatre room with a transducer system which adds vibrations to the movie watching experience. A wrap around terrace overlooks the in-ground pool with pontoon and waterfall.
The home also has guest quarters with kitchenette, external entry and ensuite.
Several contracts have been issued since the property was listed on the market.
“There are a lot homes in The Hills with amazing features but I have not have had anything like this,†Ms Ward said.
