MAL Brough was again the target of persistent questioning from the Opposition during Question Time, denying he mislead the Parliament.
He said he treated “every question seriously and I answer honestly.â€
Ms Plibersek asked the Prime Minister why Brough had not been sacked.
“I thank the honourable member for her question and she would be very well aware, as indeed would the Shadow Attorney-General be very well aware that guilt or innocence is not determined by public denunciation here or anywhere else,†Turnbull replied.
“The Minister has answered the questions put to him.
“I thank the Opposition for their interest in this matter and they should understand that the facts relating to the Ashby affair occurred some years ago.â€
Turnbull said the Opposition’s assertion Brough has mislead the Parliament “does not make it so.â€
Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus again moved a motion to censure the Prime Minister, making it the third time he has tried to do so.
This time he said Mr Turnbull was “rewarding†Mr Brough for his role in overthrowing the former speaker by refusing to punish him for misleading the house.
The motion was again voted down by the Coalition.
Brough previously apologised in Parliament saying sorry for adding to the confusion.
“In relation to the 60 Minutes interview, what was put to air was not the full question,†he said.
“Mr Speaker, my recollection of the interview was that the question was put to me in a somewhat disjointed manner, and I answered the question without clarifying precisely what part of the question I was responding to.
“This is confirmed by the tape provided by 60 Minutes and that was the reason for my answer yesterday.
“Mr Speaker, I have taken the opportunity to review the tape and transcript, and apologise to the House if my statement yesterday unwittingly added to the confusion rather than clarifying the matter.â€
But Shadow Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese described Mr Brough’s statement as a “non-apologyâ€.
“Mal Brough shouldn’t be here tomorrow,†he told Sky News.
“He should not be on the front bench tomorrow. It’s that simple.
“They need to cauterize this and they need to deal with it.â€
In bid to defend himself against Labor’s ongoing questioning over federal police raids of his home, Brough told previously told question time an interview he did with 60 Minutes about his dealings with James Ashby was edited.
In the September 2014 interview Brough appears to admit to asking Ashby for copies of then Speaker Peter Slipper’s diary.
“In relation to the 60 Minutes interview, what was put to air was not the full question,†he previously told Parliament.
But the program released uncut footage of its interview with the Fisher MP, which appears to contradict his claims.
“Um why then also did you um assist, seek well, did you ask James Ashby to procure um copies of Peter Slipper’s diary for you?†Journalist Liz Hayes said.
“Yes I did,†Brough replied.
Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek said if Mal Brough refused to resign, he should be sacked.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Parliament last week he stood by Brough, but “if there are new developments, obviously they will be considered.â€
Plibersek said the “misleading†of Parliament amounted to such a development.
“It is up to the PM really to answer the question: Here is the minister who is responsible for enforcing the rules in parliament, the rules around integrity, is he the right person for the job?†she told the ABC.
Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen said under the Westminster system politicians must not mislead the Parliament.
“If a Minister accidentally misleads the Parliament, they must correct it at the first available opportunity,†he said.
“That principle has taken a beating from the Turnbull Government over the last 24 hours.
“Not only do we have the Brough saga but we had the Treasurer yesterday in the House claiming that the only people who have modelled an increase in the GST is the former Labor Government.
“That is an interesting argument in and of itself but today we see, in (the media), that theory, that alibi, blown out of the water.
“Revelation that not only did former Treasurer Hockey have an increase in the GST modelled but that it sits on the desk of Treasurer Morrison.â€
Brough has faced a barrage of questions from the Opposition in Parliament ever since it was revealed his home was raided by federal police.
Mr Ashby recently told 2GB radio he gave Brough copies of Slipper’s diary, but he did not ask for them.
“Mal was concerned about travel rorts as well in relation to Slipper flying to New Zealand and using taxpayer funded money to go over and do IVF treatment with his wife in New Zealand,†he said.
“And it was me that actually send him copies of those dates we had discussed. At no point did he actually ask for them.
