Police are hunting two men who allegedly shot an 87-year-old grandfather in the leg while attempting to rob his Ipswich home this morning.

Ron Jones, 87, was shot after the offenders broke into his home on Mary Street, Bundamba, about 5.20am, police believe.

The men allegedly broke in and threatened Mr Jones while he lay in bed, shooting him when he refused to tell them where they could find money.

Police have described the attack on the widowed grandfather as cowardly.

“Offenders coming in to a house armed with a weapon and actually using the weapon, the fact that it’s loaded, the fact that they’re prepared to use it on an 87-year-old male, just shows their complete disregard for his wellbeing and the wellbeing of the community,” Inspector Keith McDonald said.

A neighbour said she was also shocked by the callous crime, telling 9NEWS she was “just gobsmacked”.

Investigators suspect today’s attempted robbery was linked to a burglary last week, during which thieves may have found a safe and returned with the intention of cracking it.

However, the victim’s family had cleared the safe and deposited money and valuables at a bank in response to the earlier crime.

Mr Jones has been living in the Mary Street home for more than 50 years, 9NEWS understands.

Neighbours described him as a nice, quiet man.

He is now receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries in the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
