Essena O'Neill is continuing to expose the ugly truths behind social media.

TEENAGE Instagram star Essena O’Neill is calling out “fake” online couples as she continues her crusade against social media.

The Queensland model, 18, made headlines last week after she sensationally quit social media, bidding farewell to her 600,000 Instagram followers and editing her photo captions to reveal the ugly truth behind the picture-perfect snaps.

Now, in a video called Love Gets Likes on her new website, Ms O’Neill recalls how she was propositioned by a famous male supermodel to engage in a romance for the purpose of supercharging their respective social media followings.

She added that the proposed “business deal” was something “a lot people” were doing on social media.

In the six-minute clip, Ms O’Neill said she and the unnamed male star met while holidaying in Thailand four months ago, at the height of her Instafame.

“He made it obvious he really wanted to pursue an online relationship,” she said.

“He thought it would go crazy. He referred to other couples that had been doing it. He said we’d have all this free travel, that if we became a couple we’d both bump up our followers. We could make YouTube videos and make heaps of money.

“He referred to a lot of people who were doing just that. And he said in the industry it is not unheard of to do this, that it is actually really smart and that I should think about it seriously as a business proposal.”

Ms O’Neill said she was bemused by the offer and that she thought it was “really sad”.

“I think not a lot of people realise that when you put something online and you have a lot of followers and you are making money from it, it is a business, so why not collaborate with someone else and have a relationship and get more followers?” she said.

“I think it really shocked me realising that this person was only pursuing me because I had a heap of followers. I had a carefree personality online and I looked beautiful in pictures.”

Ms O’Neill did not refer to any other couples by name in her video, but suggested fake relationships were further proof that things seen on social media were not to be believed.

“Do I have to embarrass myself to get people to realise that online relationships or images are definitely not what they seem?” she said.

Ms O’Neill, of the Sunshine Coast, also boasted more than 250,000 YouTube subscribers and her Snapchats were watched by more than 60,000 when she signed off social media for good last month.

Suddenly disenchanted with the world of social media stardom, she shut down her Tumblr, YouTube and Snapchat accounts and edited her Instagram feed with the “true captions”, such as that she probably “took over 100 in similar poses trying to make my stomach look good” and “would have hardly eaten that day”.

She also revealed the extent to which she was paid to promote certain products on her account.

But since quitting social media, Ms O’Neill has admitted she struggled to pay rent and urged fans of her new website, letsbegamechangers.com, to support her.

“What I’m doing scares the absolute f*ck out of me,” she said in a video posted on the website last week.

“I don’t know where I’m going, I don’t know what’s going to happen next, I have no idea how I’m going to make money.”
