ON the eve of World Kindness Day, here’s a story to break your heart and then warm it right back up again.

A 95-year-old, Dora Thomson, called the 999 emergency number in the UK (it’s 000 in Australia) on Tuesday, because she was “lonely”.

It turns out Dora struggles to look after her husband Fred, who is also 95 and has lost his sight.

Their call was answered by PC Stu Ockwell, who has now become something of a social media hero. He popped around to have a cup of tea with the elderly couple and listened to tales about life during the Second World War.

“They have good support from neighbours. I just went to comfort them,” the humble bobby told the Telegraph UK.

He visited their home in Middleton, Greater Manchester, after there were worries for the Thomsons following the emergency call.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police tweeted: “What else could we do but make them a brew and have a chat.”

PC Ockwell added: ‘We’ve had some flak over it but they’re a 95-year-old couple. We attended over a concern for their welfare.’

Fred Thomson said he was thrilled that the officer took time to chat.

He said: “It’s a change to have somebody to talk to, somebody different. I was very pleased.”
