UPDATE: MUCH like her fights, Ronda Rousey wasted no time explaining why she is so confident about destroying challenger Holly Holm Sunday’s UFC193 main event.
“Because I work hard harder than everybody,†bantamweight champion Rousey told the packed media scrum at Federation Square.
“And I want it more. That’s it.
“That’s really is it. And I know this is what I was put on this earth to do. It is really is.
“This is a mission that was given to me. I’ve found my place and what I’m supposed to be doing. And I really feel it’s better for all of us. This is my role for all the women in the division.
“It helps them all out that they get to take turns losing to me.
“And they can make a lot more money. After I retire they fight each other, they’re not going to make as much money as they are being the contenders now.
“If anything, they’ll appreciate me know but maybe not right now.
“This is my purpose and I’m fulfilling it.â€
Boxing champion Holly Holm is also hoping to silence the doubters.
“I’m a different fighter than anything she’s fought before,†Holm said of Rousey.
“I know it’s very hard but it’s not undoable. It’s a fight you’ve never seen before so come check it out.â€
As expected Rousey, the world’s most dominant athlete, was the star attraction at Thursday’s UFC Open Workouts at Federation Square.
Even before Rousey made an appearance on stage, the crowd erupted in anticipation.
Fans were sent into a frenzy when she briefly showed her face, only to cross the stage and move out of sight.
Before long, the Californian was back in front of her adoring supporters.
Dressed in a grey tracksuit, Rousey circled the stage and shadowed boxed.
After working up a sweat in the humid conditions, she slimmed down to grey tights and a black top.
The training partners – four in fact – gave Rousey a working over.
She then strapped on the boxing gloves and provided a snapshot of her immense power.
First was a series of stiff left jabs, then blistering one-two combinations.
The punches were so fierce, Rousey’s lead training partner strapped on protection padding – brandishing Glendale Fight Club - from chest to neck.
The power only increased.
For the best part of half an hour, Rousey was explosive, delivering her trademark judo tosses. And several of them.
“I don’t just go up there for show,†Rousey said.
“I’m really training while I’m up there and it’s what we need to do at this point.â€
Eventually the towel came out and the gloves were off.
She made her way to the awaiting press.
Rousey is so focused on Sunday, she admitted she was unable to appreciate the true success of the event, which is on track to break attendance record worldwide.
“I try to stay away from that. I’ve done everything I can do - all is left is for me to win,†Rousey said.
“All is left is for me to win and to make everyone that’s come out happy. That’s all I can do, is put on the most exciting and most fantastic performance that they can see.â€
Rousey explained that mental preparation was “everythingâ€.
“That’s what makes you stand apart,†Rousey said.
“Physically I’m not that much bigger. I’m smaller than Holly is and I’m not that much stronger than these other girls are, it’s mentally what sets me apart.
“Every week leading up to the fight is like a fight week.â€
In many ways Rousey overshadowed strawweight champion Joanna Jedrezejczyk, who joined Holm, Valerie Letourneau, Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva in going through their paces before a healthy crowd.
But Jedrezejczyk made her thoughts felt when it was her time to shine, labelling challenger Letourneau “scaredâ€.
“I met her in Vegas for the first time and I could see it in her eyes,†Jedrezejczyk said.
“After that, I thought f---, this chick is tough but I met her in Australia and I could see it in her eyes. Her hands were sweaty, believe me, she’s going to be worried.â€
Jedrezejczyk said there were no added nerves ahead of her title defence.
“Of course not, I’m super excited. Every single fight is making me a better fighter,†she’s said.
“I must be focused from the first seconds of the fight. She’s got loads of experience, she’s got firepower but I’m the champ and I’m going to be too fast for her.â€
And while Hunt’s camp is predicting a quick finish, Antonio “Big Foot†Silva is predicting another war.
“I love this place, I love Australia,†Silva said on his return Down Under for the first time since his historic five-round draw with Hunt in Brisbane.
“It’s going to be a war again.â€
Asked if the fight will be “more entertaining†Silva replied “Yes, because it’s only three rounds,†he said.
“We had a big battle in the first fight and I’m well-conditioned for three rounds.â€
Hunt was typically short and sharp in his address to the fans.
“I’m going to knock his head off in the first round,†Hunt said.
Valerie Letourneau understands she’s a rank outsider against champion Joanna Jedrezejczyk but the No.9 strawweight is taking it all in her stride.
“I’m a bit underdog but I’m used to it,†Letourneau told the media.
“I’m so used to it and it’s big motivation. It was always like that as a child but I’m going to prove people wrong.â€
Also the underdog, boxing champion Holly Holm is also hoping to silence the doubters.
“I’m a different fighter than anything she’s fought before,†Holm said of Rousey.
“I know it’s very hard but it’s not undoable. It’s a fight you’ve never seen before so come check it out.â€
