After probing patiently for much of the half, hitting the post and testing the keeper on a number of occasions, Nathan Burns earned Australia a penalty in the 39th minute.

Burns had come off the bench to replace Tomi Juric, who went off with injury.Skipper Mile Jedinak stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

There was one first-half scare for the hosts, with James Meredith testing the referee with a clumsy challenge in the box.
