THE Tower of London was built to awe, subdue and terrify unruly Londoners and deter foreign invaders.
Many lucky nobles have been beheaded in its long history and ghosts are rumoured to haunt parts of the famous castle.
It is also home to some priceless treasures, including some of the world’s most extraordinary diamonds.
The largest are embedded in the crown and sceptre. The awe-inspiring symbols of monarchy are still used today.
As well as coronations, the jewels are used at the State Opening of Parliament and royal funerals.
They serve as a symbol of the continuity of monarchy and reach out into the past.
