IT HAS no diamonds, no emeralds and no — it can’t transport you through time. Even so, this wrist watch, retailing at $1.1 million, is still being considered an absolute ‘bargain’ among some fashion fanatics.

Introducing the Greubel Forsey Quadruple Tourbillon — the 18 carat rose gold wrapped timepiece, that is supported by a crystal backing and over 500 hand-finished components. The watch, which takes almost one year worth of man-hours to produce, is the most elite mechanical masterpiece in its field.

Greubel Forsey, an exclusive watchmaking company based in Switzerland, spent 11 years building the 18 person team required to give the watch all of its hand finishing. So what gives this watch a tick above the rest? Co-founder of Greubel Forsey, Stephen Forsey, says it comes down to the engineering.

“It took five years just to develop this idea, the idea which might seem crazy, to put four tourbillion cages in the space of two,” he told the New York Times.

The tourbillion structure is what sets this timepiece out from the rest. The tourbillion is the intricate rotating cage that aims to counter the effects of gravity and improve accuracy. For Stephen and the team at Greubel Forsey, installing 4 tourbillions in to the timepiece resulted a watch that will vary by less than 2.5 seconds over the course of a day.

In order to keep your eye on the rotating process, the watch even comes with its own viewing window — so you won’t miss a second of the tourbillion action.

From the finicky to the facade, the detail that’s put in to the exterior of the timepiece is unmatched.

“If you look at the piece one foot away, without any magnifying glass, then you would not be able to discern the level of hand finish versus a machine-made watch,” Mr. Forsey told the New York Times.

“Even a specialist would have difficulty.”

“But as soon as you’re closer than that, then the whole thing changes. You can imagine a fine oil painting, some of the best realism paintings there are. Initially you might think it’s a photograph, but as you get closer you will see the texture, the skill of the expert,” he said.

To a connoisseur, this timepiece is unmatched. But if you are in the market to spend a cool one million on something luxurious — maybe shop around, because you could land yourself something like this:

“You could walk away with two of our top end 911 Turbo S Porsche coupes,” said Paul Lee, sales executive from Porche Parramatta.

“3.8L Flat 6 turbo engine, 0 — 100km in 3.1 seconds and you’d even have a bit of change left over.”

Or, if you’re more of a beachgoer and you like your creature comforts, maybe take a look at this 3 bedroom penthouse on the Gold Coast. It’s fitted out with lap pool, gym, spa and a sauna — and did I mention the view?
