Hawthorn forward Jack Gunston did not join in training on Tuesday and remains in doubt for the preliminary final against Fremantle on Friday night.

Gunston is nursing an injured knee and ankle, having hurt himself in the qualifying final loss to the West Coast Eagles, but had said over the weekend that he was "pretty confident" he would be fit for the cut-throat clash.

Brian Lake, who appeared to suffer an abdominal injury from last weekend's win over Adelaide, took to the track.

Several of the senior Hawks will leave for Perth on Wednesday, with the majority of the squad heading over on Thursday.

Gunston said on Tuesday he was still "hopeful" of playing but had yet to really test the injury.

"I am confident in my mind. It's healing pretty well and it's healed a lot better over the last few days as well. So I am hopeful that I'll play," he told the Hawks' website.

"I haven't really done too much running yet so once I get that going I am sure we will be right. If everything goes well early on in the week, I am sure we will make the trip over and just be ready to go."
