Changed support in 24 hours ... Christopher Pyne in the House of Representatives.

LIBERAL frontbencher Scott Morrison has staunchly denied playing a role in the knifing of former prime minister Tony Abbott in exchange for a promotion to the Treasury portfolio.

The Social Services Minister has also confirmed he rejected an offer from Mr Abbott to throw Joe Hockey “under a bus” by replacing him as Treasurer in the tumultuous hours leading to Monday’s leadership spill.

In a heated exchange with 2GB talkback host Ray Hadley, Mr Hadley pressed Mr Morrison to swear on the Bible that he had been loyal to Mr Abbott.

An offended Mr Morrison refused on the grounds he would not be bullied on his faith.

He said he had not spoken with Mr Abbott since Monday night’s coup, where he briefly shook his hand and said good luck after Malcolm Turnbull won the prime ministership.

Mr Morrison voted for Mr Abbott in the leadership ballot but has copped widespread criticism for not driving his voting bloc to support the ousted prime minister.

However he this morning denied any wrongdoing.

“I had no role in his demise. In the last five, six years I have served Tonny Abbott as a shadow minister, as a minister, and I gave him everything I had, I gave him everything he asked me to do,” Mr Morrison said.

“When bosses change ... you turn up to work the next day and you get on with it.”

He said he didn’t influence his factional allies because he was not a “union thug” like Bill Shorten.

“They’re their own people, they make their own decisions,” he said.

He revealed he had warned Tony Abbott’s office on Friday that things were “febrile” and they should be on “high alert” for a possible leadership challenge.

Mr Morrison labelled as “rubbish” suggestions that there had been a secret deal between he and Mr Turnbull to elevate him as Treasurer in exchange for the support of his allies.

“I never sought the job of Treasurer, not once. I never asked him for it, never pushed him for it,” Mr Morrison said.

“If he asks me to be Treasurer ... I will have got that on merit.”

“He can appoint anyone he likes.”

Mr Morrison is widely expected to be the only minister to get a promotion despite voting against Mr Turnbull in the spill.

Mr Hadley said a parliamentary source accused Mr Morrison of betraying Mr Abbott and damaging his own reputation for having “ran with the foxes but hunted with the hounds”.

But Mr Morrison insisted that the only person who offered him the job as Treasurer was Mr Abbott, who did so on Monday before the leadership ballot. He was also offered Foriegn Minister Julie Bishop’s job.

He said he was shocked and couldn’t comprehend why he received the 11th hour offer from Mr Abbott.

“I didn’t understand it and I didn’t understand, had we been successful that night, how we would explain (it) to the Australian people,” he said, explaining why he rejected the offer.

“I didn’t understand why he wanted me to pick a fight with Joe Hockey and throw him under the bus, and pick a fight with Julie Bishop, who I have no grievance with.”

Mr Morrison has been accused of running dead in the lead-up to the spill when he could have been brewing support for Mr Abbott.

It has also been revealed that Mr Abbott had been warned not to trust Mr Morrison as far back as May amid fears of secret dealings.

Mr Morrison appears on Mr Hadley’s program every week, and the two share a close profesional relationship.

However Mr Morrison was left seething after the shock jock tried to pressure him into swearing on the Bible.

“I was not bulllied when I was stopping the boats of people smugglers. I will not be bullied by anyone inside this place our outside this place,” Mr Morrison told waiting media after the interview.

“I’m sure after the dust settles and the moods change and all that, if he (Ray Hadley) wishes to extend me an invitation, we’ll talk on another occasion.”

It has also emerged that frontbencher Christopher Pyne told Mr Abbott he didn’t expect there would be a leadership challenge this week, 24 hours before he decided to side with Mr Turnbull.

The eduction minister confirmed on Friday that Mr Abbott had his support the day before the spill which resulted in him losing the prime ministership.

“The truth is on Sunday there was no leadership ballot, on Monday there was, then I made an assessment,” Mr Pyne told The Todayshow.

Mr Pyne said Mr Abbott was given a warning by the party room in February and seven months later things still weren’t improving.

“It was very hard for anyone to argue that he wasn’t given absolutely every opportunity to prove that he was the best person to lead the party,” he said.

Mr Pyne, who has been mooted as a possible replacement for Kevin Andrew as Defence Minister, was one of the more high-profile Liberal MPs to back Mr Turnbull in Monday’s leadership vote.

Mr Turnbull’s new cabinet will likely be announced over the weekend, with its members sworn in on Monday.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese, who went up against Bill Shorten to be opposition leader in 2013, rejected questions about whether the Labor party could be better placed to take on Mr Turnbull under him.

“That’s not going to happen,” he said.
