“IT WAS her time to dieâ€.
The man accused of murdering the little girl known to the world as “Baby Doe†allegedly told her mother that the two-and-a-half-year old was “possessed by demons†and required punishment.
After allegedly beating Bella Bond to death in her bed, Michael McCarthy reportedly stuffed the little girl’s body in a refrigerator while he and his girlfriend, Bella’s mother Rachelle Bond, went on a heroin binge that lasted for several days, before placing her body in a plastic bag and dumping it.
Grim details over Bella’s murder were read out in a Boston court overnight, including details of abuse where the child endured yelling and spanking. In the most serious of accusations, the couple would lock Bella in a closet for up to an hour while she screamed to be let out.
Suffolk Assistant District Attorney David Deakin told Dorchester Municipal Court Mr McCarthy purported to see demons, ghosts and, as a follower of the occult, believed he could exorcise them from Bella.
In court, three guards separated Mr McCarthy and Ms Bond, accused of murder (McCarthy) and accessory to murder after the fact (Bond). The pair stood side-by-side, behind a glass wall, and maintained little eye contact as the allegations were read aloud. Mr McCarthy shook his head, while Ms Bond kept her head down, at times wiping away tears.
But their stories about that fateful night and the events leading up to the September 16 identification of Bella’s body are anything but identical.
HORRIFIC DISCOVERY OF THE BODY
On the morning of June 25 this year, a woman was walking her dog on Deer Island, in Boston Harbor, when she found a plastic contractor’s construction bag along the shoreline.
The woman’s dog was “interested in the contents†and “began to paw at the bagâ€, Mr Deakin told the court. The dog walker partially opened the bag and “saw what appeared to be the limb of a small childâ€.
When police arrived, they opened the bag and found the decomposing body of an unidentified child. The child was wearing white leggings with black polka dots, but was without a shirt. She was wrapped in a zebra print blanket.
An exhaustive, three-month search to discover the identity of the child led detectives to a lifelong friend [who remained unidentified in court] of Mr McCarthy and Ms Bond on September 16.
“I’LL NEVER SEE MY DAUGHTER AGAINâ€
The friend had lived with the couple and two-year-old Bella earlier this year for “one or two weeksâ€, but moved out because he was “appalled at his [McCarthy’s] treatment of her Bella]â€.
When Bella suddenly disappeared, Mr McCarthy had told the friend that Bella had been removed by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and that’s why he hadn’t seen her.
But then, the court heard, that the friend had a rather disturbing conversation with Ms Bond last week.
Ms Bond, who had a string of prior drug and prostitution offences, had apparently gotten herself clean and sober.
“At that point he said, ‘that’s great, you’ll be able to get yourself clean and get Bella back’,†recalled Mr Deakin.
When the friend told Ms Bond it was good news, she allegedly broke down crying, saying, “I’ll never see my daughter againâ€.
“Michael killed her and I’m an accessory after the fact because I helped get rid of the body,†Ms Bond allegedly revealed.
Horrified, the friend texted Mr McCarthy: “Tell me this isn’t trueâ€, he wrote.
“She’s in DCF, that’s where she is. Who are you going to believe? Me? Or [derogatory term] Ms Bond?â€
Later, the friend spoke to his sister, who alerted him to the high-profile case of the unidentified baby found on Deer Island.
The friend texted Mr McCarthy: “Baby Doe ring a bell?â€
“SHE WAS A DEMON, IT WAS HER TIME TO DIEâ€
Later, when the friend alerted authorities, Ms Bond revealed details to police.
“Ms Bond indicated one night in late May at 11.30, Bella was unwilling to go to bed and unruly,†said Mr Deakin.
“Mr McCarthy said he would go to her bedroom and try calm her down. Ms Bond didn’t hear any noise in the bedroom for some time.â€
Curious, she entered Bella’s room and found Mr McCarthy “standing over Bella, who was on a bed and the mattress was on the floor, standing over Bella with his hand near her abdomen.â€
She moved to her daughter, but she knew she was dead.
“When Miss Bond looked at Bella, her head was swollen, and her face was grey. She asked Mr McCarthy what he had done, he did not tell her but said; ‘She was a demon, and it was her time to die’.â€
Mr McCarthy allegedly grabbed Ms bond by the throat and told her if she reported the murder to police, he and his friends would kill her.
DUMPING BELLA’S BODY
Prosecutors allege Ms Bond panicked and didn’t know what to do. She allowed Mr McCarthy to wrap Bella in a bag and stuff her in the couple’s refrigerator.
Soon after, the pair bought a large sum of heroin and Mr McCarthy injected it into Ms Bond’s neck, leading to a heroin binge where the couple were “highly intoxicated for several daysâ€.
Ms Bond said Mr McCarthy would regularly inject her with heroin in her neck to keep her sedated.
Later, Mr McCarthy told Ms Bond he would take Bella’s body and dump it into Boston Harbor.
Prosecutors allege he transferred Bella’s body into the trunk of his car, weighted down the body with a duffel bag and dumped it into the waters off South Boston Seaport.
A medical examiner’s report is pending, but initial reports have ruled out natural causes, indicating Bella died of suffocation.
DNA received by the infant’s hairbrush and compared to Baby Doe indicate a match.
WHAT ALLEGED KILLER SAYS
On Friday, Massachusetts state police interviewed Mr McCarthy, and he continued to maintain that Bella was in DCF custody and that that’s all he knew. He has not confessed, nor did he mention his conversations with his lifelong friend. Mr McCarthy is not Bella’s biological father.
Outside court, Mr McCarthy’s defense lawyer denied the allegation and described Ms Bond’s statements as “delusionalâ€.
“When she was arrested and asked to explFain what happened to her daughter, she decided to blame it on Mr McCarthy,†Jonathan Shapiro, Mr McCarthy’s lawyer, said.
“He is shocked and saddened by the death of Bella Bond, but he did not kill her.â€
FAMILY OUTBURST IN COURT
As the disturbing details surrounding the life and death of Bella Bond were read out in a Boston court, her godmother, Megan Fewtrell, lashed out.
“Rot in hell. You f***ing rot in hell,†she screamed, as guards escorted her out of the courtroom.
“It smells like herâ€, Ms Fewtrell said before the outburst, holding a stuffed animal duck, claiming it was Bella’s favourite.
SORDID CRIMINAL HISTORY
Ms Bond had a history of drug and prostitution arrests.
“In 2006, she was arrested after a car she was a passenger in was stopped for a traffic violation,†AP’s Denise Lavoie reports.
“When Bond got out of the car, police noticed she was sitting on a syringe. She was charged with possession of a hypodermic syringe.
“In 2008, she was charged in a sting operation with offering to perform sexual acts for a fee on a male police officer posing as a john.â€
In addition to several restraining orders against her by her mother and her mother’s husband, Ms Bond has a “lengthy record of convictions,†Mr Deakin said.
“It’s quite clear Ms Bond has engaged in a dangerous and destructive lifestyle.â€
WHAT THE MOTHER SAYS
“My client was homeless for years,†said Ms Bond’s lawyer, Janice Bassil.
“It is only in recent years that she has been able to get control of what was a drug habit. If you look at her record, there’s nothing since 2011.
“Since that time she has been able to obtain a home, her first in decades.
“Her position has been that she was not free to leave Mr McCarthy and that he held her captive and under duress.â€
Ms Bassil said her client voluntarily gave a statement to state police and has been willing and does want to co-operate with the district lawyer.
“She wants to see Mr McCarthy held responsible for his actions. She has no desire to go back on drugs, it was a terrible lifestyle for her. She does not want to lose her home, and what is contained there, memories of her child. It is sad for her.â€
Michael McCarthy was held without bail, while Rachelle Bond was held on $1 million bail. Both pleaded not guilty.
They will be back in court on October 20.
