Would you buy this Porsche over a Tesla Model S?

TESLA might just have its first serious rival. German sports car maker Porsche has unveiled a new concept car with credentials to make Elon Musk a little more restless at night.

Unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show, the Porsche Mission E is an electric sedan that packs 439kW of power that sprints from 0-100km/h in “under 3.5 seconds” and can drive up to 500kms without needing to be charged.

In comparison, Tesla’s Model S P90 D in its “ludicrous” mode has 568kW of power, can go from 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds and has a range of 480km.

The technology inside the Mission E is developed from the electrical systems used in Porsche’s 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car. It will uses two motors that work at the same time, with both motors used to accelerate and recover braking energy. That power is put to the ground though an all-wheel drive system, and four-wheel steering that help the Mission E lap the Nurburgring in less than eight minutes.

While its speed and range is certainly impressive, Porsche’s charging capability is undoubtedly the highlight of the vehicle. The concept takes advantage of an 800-volt system which Porsche claims can charge the car to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes when you have the right power source, roughly half the time it takes to charge a Tesla Model S.

The design of the concept is extremely futuristic, combining styling cues from both their existing four-door Panamera and 918 hypercar. To keep weight down, the body is made out of a mixture of aluminium, carbon-fibre reinforced polymer and steel.

The Mission E is expected to be revealed in the flesh later this week in Frankfurt.
