AFL: Make sure to tune in to Open Mike with Anthony Stevens, Monday at 9.30pm only on Fox Footy channel 504
NORTH Melbourne champion Wayne Carey says he still hasn’t forgiven himself for the extramarital affair with Anthony Stevens’ then-wife Kelli that tore apart the club.
But Carey refuted Stevens’ claims that he never apologised to his former teammate and said he was remorseful for what happened.
“To be honest I haven’t forgiven myself,†Carey told Channel 7 last night.
“It’s been a long process and I still deal with it from day to day.â€
Carey claimed he had apologised face-to-face “on a number of occasions†but said it was possible that Stevens’ emotions were so high that he didn’t hear him.
“It was probably the one thing, I won’t say hurt me, but I was disappointed that Anthony thought I hadn’t apologised,†Carey said.
“It’s very strong emotions, very strong feelings that are clearly still there, so completely understand when you have those feelings and emotions sometimes you don’t hear what people are actually saying to you and I completely understand that.â€
He added during the interview: “I understand that there are people still hurting.â€
Carey’s comments came hours before an episode of Open Mike in which Stevens broke his silence.
Stevens told Mike Sheahan Carey never said sorry and he would not accept an apology now. READ MORE HERE
“It’s one thing he has never done,†Stevens said.
“He has never actually gone out of his way to say sorry — for whatever reason.â€
“I’m still hurt from it, but I have moved on now.â€
Stevens said he had his suspicions before discovering the affair in 2002 and that he remained hurt by the betrayal.
“I had known for a while, but until you can actually catch the individuals, it is pretty big speculation to query someone about that,†he says.
“In the end, I was the one that actually caught the two of them that night.â€
But Stevens does not blame himself for the affair.
“You make choices in life and your own decisions, and I didn’t have a part in any of those decisions or choices,†he said.
“So in the end I don’t blame myself. I wouldn’t say I was perfect in the marriage. Marriage is hard, it’s difficult, but when you commit to someone you commit all the way through.â€
Stevens also detailed the moment a surgeon told him he would never play football again after a freak accident outside the Redback Brewery Hotel in North Melbourne in 2000.
Stevens explained how he was leaving the hotel when a shard of falling glass struck him: “I felt the force of the glass hit the side of my neck ... I could feel the whole side of my face just peel away and there was blood everywhere.â€
Stevens was rushed to hospital, where he was told he would have died if he had not been so close.
Incredibly, Stevens played 14 weeks later. The North Melbourne Team of the Century member retired at the end of 2004.
