But don’t be fooled by the self-deprecating duo who say their new ABC comedy, Sammy J and Randy in Ricketts Lane, was shot on an iPhone and shouldn’t be watched “by anyone”.

Sammy (Sam McMillan), is Randy (Heath McIvor) more purple than your previous housemates?

No one’s ever wanted to live with me before, so I’ll take what I can. He doesn’t pay rent, doesn’t do chores, is rude to me, has parties in my own house and doesn’t invite me. But there’s something resembling a friendship.

Sammy J and Randy this is your first foray into TV. How did it happen?

R: We wrote it as a maritime-based adventure on the high seas; Captain Sammy and his first mate, Randy. But I left the script on a bus, and someone got to it with a 2B pencil, added all these jokes and lo and behold, it was a six part sitcom. And it was way better! But we kept the squid and the parrot.

Who is the real star of this show?

S: The parrot. And we’ve surrounded ourselves with people who can actually act.

R: That’s what you do when you want to make a TV show but have no idea how to do it. The fact that they let us do it at all is ridiculous.

S: Oh, it’ll be subject to parliamentary inquiry. I’d be shocked if the ABC commissions another comedy for years after the stench of this one. People will be turning off within three minutes.

What’s the show all about?

S: I’m Sammy J and I’m a very bad lawyer.

R: I’m Randy and I have an ex-wife with whom I wish to reconcile with every fibre of my being. End scene! It’s a rollicking tale, with highs, lows, middles, squids and parrots. We used the taxpayers’ money on a 12 foot long squid. There was no money left for catering. But there was a lot of calamari.

Randy, what went wrong in your marriage?

R: Ah, Victoria Vincent. I was a terrible husband. But she loved it. I think she had some self-esteem issues and I took advantage of that, I admit it.

S: To be fair, you cheated on her quite a bit.

Are we likely to see a second season?

R: I hope so, we’ve got plenty of calamari left over.

What’s next for you guys?

We’re going to split up, just foreshadowing the atrocious reaction. But we’ll write a new live show, just in case.

Did you have to tone down the rude jokes?

That was probably the biggest challenge, finding a balance between doing what we do live, and assaulting people in their living rooms. If you keep watching, you knew the risks. That should be the promo.
