AS the announcement of the final 53-man squad for the San Francisco 49ers fast approaches, the woman responsible for bringing one of Australia’s best footballers into the world has told of her excitement at the prospect of her son playing in the NFL.

In an interview with Channel 9, Jodie Hayne recalled her son possessing all the attributes of a brilliant athlete from a very young age.

“I used to watch him as a little kid kicking that ball so high in the sky, and now you see him out there catching and you think ‘I saw you do that when you were little’,” she said.

Despite being his biggest supporter, not even Hayne’s mum thought she would see such quick success in his first few months with the 49ers.

“I didn’t think he would be that good at it,” Jodie said.

“When I watched him play that first game I just said ‘I should have known, he is going to kill it’.

“This is his destiny for sure.”

Jodie Hayne will fly over to the US tomorrow night to watch San Francisco’s fourth and final trial game, and be by her son’s side when the roster is announced. If she had it her way, she would be down on the field with him.

“I’m excited to go and watch him play that fourth trial. But I just want to put on his pads and helmet and say ‘come on now son’.”

The proud parent also spoke to radio hosts Hamish Blake and Andy Lee on the Hamish & Andy show on Today’s Hit Network, and had a rather unexpected message for Hayne’s NFL competitors.

“Get out there and smash him, because once you smash him he will get up and come back twice as hard.”

The radio duo praised the former NSW Origin star for his composure during his journey to American’s biggest sporting stage.

“He fully deserves it. We have loved the story because he has absolutely taken a risk that 99.9 per cent of people wouldn’t take,” Blake said.

Andy Lee gave credit to Hayne’s professionalism.

“He has been so good with the media, he has not got ahead of himself and he keeps playing down the situation, even when he has done very well.”

Despite Hayne’s status as one of the most well-known athletes in rugby league, Jodie said she is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for the 27-year-old.

“From the Hayne family we just want to say ‘thank you very much’. We are very overwhelmed, even Jarryd is from the support from Australia, I can’t believe that.”

“Jarryd is doing a lot of things that we would all love to do — get up there and do it, don’t let anything hold you back.”

The San Francisco 49ers will take on the San Diego Chargers at midday on Friday (AEDT), while the final 53-man roster is due to be released on Sunday.
