MELBOURNE Victory have spluttered into the quarter-finals, seeing off some late second half pressure from Rockdale City Suns to progress 3-2.
Coach Kevin Muscat wasn’t overly impressed with his team’s performance, saying during the match: “they’ve made life difficult to us by getting men behind the ball but we have to lift†and he was made to sweat when Leigh Broxham’s 86th minute own goal gave the underdogs a sniff.

ROCKDALE CITY SUNS v MELBOURNE VICTORY
MATCH REPORT: Victory book mouth-watering showdown with Adelaide
The A-League champions are through, just, taken right till the end of the match by NPL NSW side Rockdale City Suns before progressing 3-2.
Jesse Makarounas had given the away side the lead just before the halftime break when he was left free on the penalty spot, a tough way for Rockdale to go into the break.
Rockdale’s task was then made more difficult when Besart Berisha headed home Victory’s second in the 50th minute but just three minutes later, via the penalty spot, they began their comeback — Marko Jesic passing the ball into the bottom right corner beyond new Victory No.1 Danny Vukovic after young Thomas Deng was called for a handball.
Makarounas then scored a classy second as Victory looked to lock things up but an own goal from Leigh Broxham after 86 minutes meant a panicky end ensued.
A late flurry of corners forced Vukovic into some saves as Rockdale keeper Ivan Necevski joined in the penalty box scrum. As it was, Victory escaped and will host Adelaide United in the next round.
PALM BEACH SHARKS v WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS
MATCH REPORT: Wanderers rain on Palm Beaches’ FFA Cup parade
They were the victims of the only upset in the short history of the FFA Cup, but A-League big boys Western Sydney Wanderers avoided another repeat of last year’s loss to Adelaide City, cruising past Palm Beach Sharks 2-0.
With a short water break, thanks to an unexpected sprinkler malfunction, the Wanderers took the lead in the 28th minute when new signing Dimas Delgado was left free at the back post to head home Jaushua Sotirio’s cross from the right.
The favourites then dominated the second half, finally sealing the win in the 86th minute through defender Brendan Hamill, whose finished from a corner would please the most talented of strikers.
There was a sour point for the Wanderers on their way to the quarter-finals, where they will travel to face Perth Glory, with Mark Bridge forced off just minutes after the restart with an apparent groin injury.
METROSTARS v OAKLEIGH CANNONS
A late altercation between MetroStars and Oakleigh Cannons players threatened to see temperatures boil over but Oakleigh held on progress to the next stage, winning 1-0.
MetroStars has reached the Round of 16 stage by firstly gaining direct entry by winning the inaugural National Premier Leagues competition and then shocked NPL NSW premiers Blacktown City in the Round of 32. But the cashed up NPL VIC side Oakleigh proved a step too far, with former Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle Jets striker Mirjan Pavlovic giving the away side the lead in the 66th minute.
Oakleigh then held onto their lead and will be confident of reaching the final four, drawing fellow NPL VIC side Hume City in the next round.
HUME CITY v SYDNEY OLYMPIC
Hume City sealed their place in the FFA Cup quarter-finals, beating fellow Member Federation side Sydney Olympic 3-1 at ABD Stadium.
It was a game where the away side fell two goals behind before threatening a comeback before a late strike from Theo Markelis wrapped up the win for Hume City.
Daniel Clark had given Hume the lead in the 35th minute when he tapped home the loose ball after goalkeeper Paul Henderson’s initial save and a tap in would also give the Victorian side a two-goal lead, via Marcus Schroen just before half-time.
Olympic’s Dimitri Hatzimouratis then grabbed a goal back in the 64th minute before Markelis confirmed Hume’s progression with just over five minutes remaining.
