KERRY  Hayes’ home in Sydney’s famous Bondi has five bedrooms but it has been home to countless people.
Mr Hayes, who is now selling his property, has shared his house through Airbnb listings for about two years. He said in that time it has earnt up to $90,000 a year.
“I like the idea of a sharing economy and I have met many great people through Airbnb,†Mr Hayes said.
He conceived the idea to build a new home that allowed him to live in it comfortably alone, or to have guests, after first staying in an Airbnb apartment in New York. “I thought, ‘This is how I want to live, I want to have a lively house’,†Mr Hayes said.
He called on award-winning Âarchitect Drew Heath to design such a home.
Mr Hayes has also spent many years in Japan and was influenced by the architecture of the country when creating his dream home.
“The rooms are multipurpose
The result is a finely crafted house with a light touch. In the downstairs “living-dining†area there is a delicate cantilevered staircase and a wall of glass with a backdrop of a beautiful neighbouring brick wall.
The rear garden meanwhile is private, surrounded by thick bamboo and features a simple water feature and streamlined fountain.
While Mr Hayes loves the house itself, he said the street and surrounding area also has plenty to offer.
“I don’t think there is a better place in the world,†Mr Hayes said.
“The street is on a ridge between Bondi and Tamarama and I am down at the beach a couple of times a day,†he said.
The property is listed with Simon Exleton of McGrath Edgecliff and is to be auctioned on September 5. It has a price guide of more than $2.75 million.
