A thick fog caused airport delays and chills in Canberra on Friday morning after temperatures dropped to 1.9 degrees overnight.

Fog began to build over the capital about 7 o'clock on Thursday night with plenty still lingering late on Friday morning.

Flights were cancelled in and out of Canberra Airport overnight causing disruptions to flights on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Visibility was down to 500 metres during the early hours of the morning, although it may have been lower in some parts of the capital.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Sean Carson said the conditions were caused by a perfect mix of moisture and fog.

"We've had fairly still conditions over the last couple of days, with a fair bit of moisture yesterday and a bit of drizzle around, so that's a fairly good prerequisite for fog," he said.

ACT Policing repeatedly warned drivers to take care on the roads on Friday, with six crashes on territory roads before 4pm.

Mr Carson said Canberra could expect to enjoy clearer weather on Saturday and Sunday.

"There's a change in conditions on the way bringing cloud cover and wind, and some rain this afternoon so there shouldn't be any fog," he said.

"We're expecting some fairly windy conditions over the weekend, which tends to blow the fog away."

The bureau says Saturday will be partly cloudy with only a 10 per cent chance of rainfall.

Temperatures will reach 12 degrees on Saturday afternoon with north-westerly winds.

On Sunday, there is a slight chance of a shower in the morning with a top of 10 and a low of 2 degrees.

Clear skies on Monday and Tuesday are expected to bring a return of sub-zero mornings and frost throughout across the territory.

Temperatures will dip to minus 2 degrees on Monday before dropping further to  minus 4 degrees on Tuesday morning.
