Google will overhaul its work apps starting on Monday, revealing big changes to accommodate workers coming back into offices to collaborate with those still at home, as well as a new plan to assist Aussies running side-hustles.

Changes to the tech giant’s Workspace apps will also introduce a new chat feature called Spaces and will inch closer towards the death of Google Hangouts.

Australia will be one of just six countries to see the changes to Google Workspaces that will eventually impact its more than three billion users.

Google Workspace general manager Javier Soltero said the tech giant was revamping the apps previously known as G Suite to accommodate “hybrid” ways of working, where some workers filtered back into offices while others remained at home.

“Work is no longer defined by the location that it occurs in,” he said. “Regardless of what model we go forth with, this idea that what you do and where you do it are firmly decoupled is an important principle.”

As such, Google Workspace users will be able to specify their work location in their Calendar after the revamp, and tell other meeting participants the location from which they’ll be joining video meetings.

Other changes coming in September will let all users — whether in office meeting rooms or at home — to virtually raise a hand, vote in a poll or join an in-meeting chat to ensure no one is left out.

Google itself will continue to support hybrid working this year, with CEO Sundar Pichai calling for 60 per cent of its workforce to return to the office three days a week later this year, while others work remotely.

The changes also come after Prime Minister Scott Morrison last week said it was “time to get back to the office” to revitalise Australian city centres.

Google will also release a new chat feature called Spaces in its Workspaces overhaul that will replace Rooms within Google Chat, and will also launch a Workspace subscription offer for individuals and sole traders who want to ramp up their side-hustles.

The individual subscriptions, available for $13.99 monthly, will unlock extra features including smart booking services and marketing email.
