A 16-year-old boy has been attacked by a shark on the NSW North Coast.

The attack took place at Wooli Beach, north of Coffs Harbour.

Ambulance NSW confirmed they were treating the teenager at the scene.

He is believed to have suffered serious injuries.

Mr Tratt was spearfishing with his brother when the attack took place.

A doctor and paramedic were winched down from the RACQ Lifeflight Rescue helicopter to render aid to Mr Tratt, who had suffered significant injuries to his leg from the attack.

But despite working to save him for more than an hour, he died at the scene.
