When you’re 92-years-old, you’ve probably seen and done most things life has to offer, so sometimes you have to get creative to get your kicks.
This potty mouthed legend has done just that, deciding to ride his mobility scooter down Melbourne’s busiest freeways this week.
And while motorists on the freeway that day were seriously concerned for his welfare that day, the internet is absolutely loving him.
Melbourne man, Bruce Bromley, posted footage of the incident to dashcam Owners Australia, explaining that “this cobber was determined to get home”.
Bruce had been driving along the Monash Freeway about 2.30pm on Friday when he noticed a tiny vehicle zoom by his left hand window.
Bruce soon realised it was actually an elderly man and his mobility scooter — zooming down the 100km/hr freeway at a top of 16km/hr.
“I was just completely shocked,” he told 7 News later.
Bruce approached the man’s scooter, wound down his window and yelled out to him: “Move over, mate, you’re on the freeway!”
To Bruce’s horror, the elderly man released a barage of abuse, most of which involved the phrase “Get f***ed!”
Desperate to help the man, Mr Bromley called the police to explain the situation and continued driving slowly behind him with his hazard lights on.
“I just told him to try and pull over and he told me to f*** off,” Mr Bromley told 7 News.
Many were quick to praise the elderly man on his ability to “stick to the left lane”.
Others speculated on what had sparked this dude’s impromptu road trip in the first place.
Many, like Bruce, also noticed his fellow road user employed the etiquette of a cyclist, sticking his hand out of the sides of his mobility scooter to alert motorists to his changing position.
At other points the elderly man would veer into the service lane, then back onto the left hand lane of the freeway, unsettling Bruce at every turn.
At one point a large truck even swerved quite close to the man.
“It was very aggressive, but at 92, the poor bugger was just confused and a bit overwhelmed,” he said.
“If I wasn’t there, he would have got collected, and I couldn’t sleep at night if something like that happened.”
Others agreed that Bruce’s quick thinking saved the man’s life.
Audio of the phone call features an officer asking Mr Bromley what colour the mobility scooter was.
“Brown and black, there’s only one. They won’t miss it,” he replied.
Four minutes later, police were on scene to stop the joy ride.
He was taken to Glen Waverly Police Station, where his family came to collect him.
People all over internet are calling Bruce a “champion” and congratulating him on his bravery on the road and also in the face of a seriously angry 92-year-old man.
Good on ya, Bruce.
