Good morning!
1. In markets overnight, the pound has rallied after a day of chaos in British politics saw Prime Minister Theresa May survive a vote of no confidence. US stocks and bond yields are both higher on the prospect of improving US-China relations, although stocks saw some small pre-close clips to the gains of the day. Predictions of a 20% drop in Sydney housing prices is a bleak scenario laid out by Capital Economics.
2. The Aussie dollar is benefiting from the more positive outlook on US-China trade negotiations. The AUD/USD rose to .7238, the highest point this week, before settling at 0.7216. David Scutt has more.
3. The crime we can’t report on. A prominent Australian has been convicted of a serious crime, with a Victorian jury finding the person guilty of the charges this week. Publishing any details in Australia could lead to charges of contempt of court against any publication and journalists responsible. However, in the global internet era, what has occurred is being widely reported globally.
4. Theresa May is still in power after a no-confidence vote on Wednesday evening, local time. The vote was forced after 48 MPs sent a letter of no-confidence. While May won by a comfortable margin, she still has to govern knowing that more than a third of her MPs don’t support her leadership.
