SHOPPERS are stranded, unable to get to the cars, after a Brisbane Coles store was evacuated when a large section of the floor started “collapsing”.
Shoppers reported hearing banging noises as the floor tiles lifted and buckled.
Emergency services were called to the The Markets Shopping Centre on Mollison St and Boundary Rd about 1pm. They were still on scene at 2.30pm assessing the situation.
Shoppers were ordered out and cars had to be moved but the car park has since been closed off.
Business owners, staff, shoppers and car owners parked there have since been shut out.
Two diners told The Courier-Mail they were midway through lunch when they were told to leave.
“We packed up and waited for the next instructions and then all the emergency service vehicles arrived,” Louise Robson said.
“We weren’t told what the issue was but it was very calm.
“We have only been told now it was a floor collapse.”
One woman said she’d heard a car had hit a pylon in the car park.
“My car’s in there (and) I have to get my kids,” she said.
The car park is directly under the supermarket.
Another man said he needed to get his daily dose of methadone from the pharmacy inside the centre.
“Worst case scenario is I could end up doing something I’m not proud of,” he said
