A man who drove a car into a house in Perth's south and then assaulted the occupant, leaving him in hospital with serious injuries, is the subject of a major police manhunt.

About 7:10am the man was spotted driving erratically near the intersection of Dixon Road and Mandurah Road East, in Rockingham.

Shortly afterwards the car crashed into a house on Barnes Street in Rockingham.

The driver then attacked the occupant of the house, leaving the man aged in his 60s with what police say are serious injuries.

The victim has been taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

Authorities are asking for public help to find the man, described as dark-skinned, about 40 years old, with a thin build and about 165cm tall with short, dark, balding hair.

He was wearing an aqua jumper and long blue pants.

He was last seen driving towards Rockingham from a petrol station on Beach Street, in Kwinana beach around 8:20am.

According to police the man has been involved in a number of "incidents" in Rockingham, and his car, a white 2009 Nissan Navara utility, has sustained substantial front-end damage.

The licence plate was 1ECH672.

Members of the public are being asked not to approach the man but to call police on 131 444 if they see him or have any more information.
