An 18-month-old baby boy almost died in an alleged poisoning earlier this year when he overdosed on a high dose of a prescription drug given to him by his mother.
The 20-year-old woman will today front court after being charged with seven counts of using poison to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm, NSW Police confirmed in a statement.
In January the baby boy was admitted to Sydney Children’s Hospital with high levels of the drug Tegretol in his system, despite not being prescribed the medication at the time.
Tegretol is a drug used to treat seizures, nerve pain and bipolar disorder and usually causes side effects including nausea and vomiting.
NSW Police will allege the mother administered the drug to her child without him being prescribed it and against medical advice.
Following an investigation launched by the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, the 20-year-old was arrested this morning at a home in Lurnea, in Sydney’s south-west.
She was then refused bail and is expected to appear at Liverpool Local Court today.
The child has since been released from hospital and remains in the care of relatives.
