The Labor faithful will come together as the party officially launches its campaign for the South Australian election.

Premier Jay Weatherill will continue with his theme of standing up for SA when he rallies supporters at the set-piece event on Sunday, less than four weeks from the March 17 poll.

"That's what I think this campaign is about," he said.

"It's about standing up for jobs, standing up for our schools, standing up for our hospitals and also standing up for our renewable energy future.

"This is a very important campaign and we''ll be putting a very positive set of plans in front of the people of South Australia."

The March election is considered one of the most uncertain for many years with a genuine three-way contest looming between the Labor government, the Liberal opposition and Nick Xenophon's SA-BEST party.

Mr Xenophon is planning to run candidates in as many as 36 seats and is hoping to seize the balance of power in the next parliament.

He says South Australians are sick of the Liberal and Labor parties and will look to his group to keep a strong check on the next government.

But Liberal Leader Steven Marshall has ruled out working with the former senator and has urged voters to give him a clear majority.

He's described the election as the most important in the state's history and believes voters want change.

Mr Marshall's chances have also been bolstered by a recent redistribution of electoral boundaries which seem to favour the opposition, nominally handing it a handful of extra seats.

The changes mean for Labor to retain office and win a record fifth term, the party actually needs to increase its vote compared to the results in 2014.
