Most Gold Coast beaches are expected to remain closed on Sunday due to dangerous surf and strong rips, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of hazardous conditions.

On Saturday several people suffered minor injuries after being swept over at rocks at Rainbow Bay and a 14-year-old girl who had tried to go swimming with about 12 mates had to be rescued, a Surf Lifesaving Queensland spokesman said.

Along the southeast Queensland coast there were strong rips and waves up to two metres.

Experts will examine conditions on Sunday morning but it is expected that all beaches north of Kirra will stay shut.

A handful of Sunshine Coast beaches, including Maroochydore, were also closed on Saturday and will be assessed before swimmers are allowed back in the water.

A hazardous surf warning remains in place across the Gold and Sunshine coasts and Fraser Island for the weekend.
