The death of Black Heart Bart's part-owner Craig Delacy during the week will serve as inspiration for jockey Brad Rawiller in the final group 1 of the year, the Kingston Town Classic at Ascot on Saturday.

Black Heart Bart, which took nine runs to win his maiden in Western Australia, has taken his owners across the country as he has won five group 1s and it would be fitting if he could make it six on home turf.

Rawiller was shocked at the news of Delacy's death saying he had dinner with him and the other owners after Black Heart Bart was runner-up in the Railway Stakes two weeks ago.

"Craig was just a champion guy. It would be great if we can fly the flag for him," Rawiller said on Perth radio.

"What starts as a business association turned into being great friends and it was a real kick in guts to hear about it."

Trainer Darren Weir decided to pull the pin on the Melbourne spring with Black Heart Bart after a couple of niggles got the better of him and aimed him for the Perth carnival.

He returns to weight-for-age after his brave second to Great Shot as topweight in the Railway Stakes and has drawn gate one, which was a concern to connections but not Rawiller.

"I would take barrier one every day of the week. With him, you would probably prefer five or six, but it is better than drawing outside 10," Rawiller said.

"We might get into an awkward position at some point in the race but we can make our own luck."

Black Heart Bart has been backed from $3.20 to $2.80 since the draw at Sportsbet with Doncaster winner It's Somewhat, which has been set for the group 1 by Godolphin, a $5.50 hope and West Australian Guineas winner Perfect Jewel at $6. Chris Waller-trained Tom Melbourne, which has run three group 1 placings this preparation, is an $8 chance.
