Gosford trainer Angela Davies warned the owners of Waitandwatch when they were naming the six-year-old to be careful what they called him because it could come true.

The moniker they came up with for their charge has proven correct in many ways as he has won five of his seven starts in a career that has tested the patience of all.

"He has always got something going on," Davies said. "We knew he could gallop very early on, but he went shin sore five or six times. So we waited.

"He was a little soft-boned and took his time to mature. Then we got him to the track this time last year and he showed what he can do."

Waitandwatch won all four of his starts in that preparation under apprentice Blaike McDougall, including the Cusick Stakes, one of the features on his home track of Gosford in January.

He went for a spell and appeared ready to shoot through his grades in the spring but a gashed knee while being shoed in October halted his preparation.

"It took a while for him to get over that. He was ready to go and he had trialled really well," Davies said. "It is just the sort of thing that happens to Waitandwatch."

So the Time Thief six-year-old finally returns at Rosehill on Saturday and is the second half of a formidable summer team for Davies with Machinegun Jubs.

The pair sit around the 80 benchmark and are set to improve their marks in the next couple of months. Machinegun Jubs has already become a Saturday winner this time in.

"It would be good if Waitandwatch could join her as a Saturday winner," Davies said. "He is up to it. The problem is the draw [of 11] on Saturday.

"Barriers are everything. We saw that with Jubs when she drew wide and was beaten and then got an inside draw and won."

McDougall will once again be part of the Waitandwatch team at Rosehill. He has come a long way in the nearly a year since Waitandwatch last raced.

"He was struggling to get a ride back then, now he is in town and doing really good," Davies said. "He has always got on well with Waitandwatch and it would be good if they can continue to step through the grades together."

Davies doesn't really have a target for Waitandwatch and Machinegun Jubs during the summer, but believes they could both get through to open class and perhaps win in listed company.

"It is a good time of year for both of them because if they keep stepping up there are some nice races for them," Davies said.

"We will see how Waitandwatch goes on Saturday before deciding his next move but both being sprinters around the same level, the trick will be keeping them apart."
